Bothell History

The area now known as Bothell started as a forested and swampy area and was home to the Simump Tribe of Native Americans who called the region Squak ("swampy lowland"). White settlers entered in the 1870s to begin homesteading and initiated business in logging along the Squak Slough. Commerce began with merchant shops in the 1880s followed shortly by a school and church with newspaper and banking started in the 1900s. It was in 1909 that the City of Bothell was incorporated and named after the owner of the first 80 platted acres.

The primary commerce through the early years remained in the lumber and shingle industries. The City was ravaged twice by fires, in 1908 and 1911. A fire department was started in 1916 to protect the City and as a result some of those historic buildings rebuilt are still standing today!

Poplated by 600 residents when incorporated, fifty years later the City was home to just 1000 people. As logging ended, farming took over as the primary means of business. In the proceeding 50 years, Bothell became a suburban community of over 30,000 people.
